YEAR A1 SUBJECTS
Aqida (A1): The Essentials of Creedal Theology

This year course in ‘Aqīdah (theology) starts with an introduction to ‘first principles’; these are the epistemic principles that inform various Islamic disciplines. In ‘Aqīdah they distinguish what must be considered a necessary point of creed from an optional one; and in law they help distinguish the lawful from the unlawful.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The particulars of Aqīdah will be studied by drawing on both the theological and spiritual traditions of Islam for each complements the other. The discipline of ‘Aqīdah provides theological frame works on how to think about God, His attributes and other related matters. The spiritual dimension gives the context in which those frames become relevant. The purpose is to bring together these two cognitive disciplines in a synthesized way, which leads to a realized connection with God and His creation.
By attending this course, students can expect to attain an understanding of Islam’s use of rational and metaphysical arguments which frame discussions like God’s existence, our existence and creation in an intelligible manner. By familiarizing and understanding these arguments, a believer is better positioned to become truly cognisant of the Prophetic ﷺ statement, when he was asked, ‘what is excellence (ihsān)?’ He ﷺ replied, ‘That you worship Allah as though you see Him and if you do not see Him know that He sees you’.
